Within government restrictions Brentham went to town to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day. Many houses were festooned with bunting and several people had afternoon tea in, or just outside, their front garden. Here is just one little corner of Brentham celebrating – recorded by resident and filmmaker Angela Kay.
If you have any photos of your celebrations please send them to archive@brentham.com and we will post a selection.
The 9th of May would have seen the annual May Day celebrations taking place in Brentham. However government restrictions mean our event, like many others, cannot go ahead. Instead we give you a Virtual May Day.
Here you can have just a glimpse of what might have been.
But we’ll be back – put Saturday 8th May 2021 in your diary for next year.

CALLING ALL BUNTING MAKERS/OWNERS!
This Friday 8th May is worth celebrating: it’s the 75th anniversary of VE Day and it’s the start of a Bank Holiday weekend. We’re living through rather different times at the moment but perhaps we need cheering up now more than ever.
Individual streets may be organising their own celebrations (socially-distanced of course) but if you have bunting lurking in a drawer somewhere, or can get your children to help make some, please put it out in your front garden – ideally before the Thursday 8pm clap for key workers – and let’s have A BRIGHTER BRENTHAM!
We’d like to capture what lockdown in Brentham is like. Have you got a story to tell? Are you a key worker? Are you having to work from home? What is it like having to do home schooling (as a parent or a child)? Are you self-isolating and having to rely on neighbours? Apart from clapping for the NHS and other key workers – is your street support group doing other activities? If you have a story then please email news@brentham.com preferably with pictures or just send some unusual photos. (We hear that hedgehogs have been spotted in Meadvale Road!)
With details of support groups and your stories, we plan to issue a Brentham News Special which goes to every household – so no one is missed.
In the meantime – stay well and keep safe.
Details of street support groups can be found here
During these uncertain times Harrison’s, Hook & Cleaver and Pitshanger Bookshop are offering a combined home delivery service for those who are vulnerable or unwell.
Please telephone Harrison’s (020-8998-7866) or Hook & Cleaver (020-8997-6988) to place your order, pay over the phone and let them know if you are ordering from the other shops so they can liaise regarding delivery.
For books please email info@pitshangerbooks.co.uk Fiona does not have access to a completely comprehensive range but will be very happy to look at options and suggest alternatives if at all possible.
They’d be grateful if this service is used by vulnerable people only as they have limited capacity. However for those able to get out and about they can happily coordinate orders for collection.
Brentham resident Hilary Padmore works/volunteers at Ealing Foodbank and says:
‘We are seeing ever greater numbers of clients and really need lots of “long life bags” or “bags for life” for them to take their food home in’
Can you help? If so perhaps you could drop off any bags you have (not single use bags) at either 48 Fowlers Walk or 47 Meadvale Road (in the green box by the front gate) and we will make sure they get delivered to the main site in Hanwell.

The Brentham Society is trying to ensure that any vulnerable or self-isolating resident on the estate has the necessary support they need. To that end – in tandem with the Pitshanger Community Association (PCA) we are attempting to set up a network of streets. We are aware that some “whatsapp” groups have already been set up whilst other more informal groups exist (see below for contact details).
Please let us know if others exist and/or if you would be willing to set one up for your street.
You will be aware that May Day celebrations have been cancelled and we now know the organisers of the annual Open Gardens Day, due to be held in June, have cancelled the event. In addition The Brentham Club and grounds are now closed to all members and non-members but Pitshanger Park remains open.
The Annual General Meeting of The Brentham Society for the year ending August 2019 will be held at The Brentham Club on
Tuesday 3rd March at 8pm.
Our speaker this year is Steve Pound (former local MP) who will share some entertaining reflections on his life and times and on the Brentham Society’s 50th Anniversary.
Following the talk there will be a review of the year and plans for the coming year. All Brentham Society members are encouraged to attend to voice their views on issues affecting Brentham.
Minutes of last year’s AGM are here
Refreshments will be served – we look forward to seeing you.
